Sola Scriptura and the Sabbath
This is a quote from Johannes Eck to Martin Luther during the Leipzig debate, where Luther challenges the Catholic church on the power of the Pope and Councils.
Eck championed the authority and primacy of the Church through councils and popes: “I venerate the Roman pontiff as Christ’s vicar.”
Luther defended the authority and primacy of the Scriptures through study and prayer: ” For the sake of Scripture, we should reject pope and councils”
Here is the big line from Eck scored on Luther, as he couldn’t respond to it:
“If, however, the [Roman] Church has had power to change the Sabbath of the Bible into Sunday and to command Sunday keeping, why should it not have this power concerning other [holy] days…? If you omit the latter [liturgical holy days], and turn from the Church to Scriptures alone, then you must keep the Sabbath with the Jews, which has been kept from the beginning of the world.”
If sola scriptura is your Reformation cry, you must return to the Bible Sabbath or you must reject sola scriptura and accept Rome’s claim to determine divine truth, evidenced by her power to change the Sabbath to Sunday. – Dr. Eck to Martin Luther in the Leipzig debate (Enchridion, 78 79) (quoted in Odom 246)
